| Rey Alfonso was born into the profusion of color and clamor of improvisation that was Cuba in the 1970s. From childhood he has honed his skills and sought the best medium to express conflict, determination, passion and pure energy. In 1992 Alfonso left Cuba and settled in San Francisco, where he worked to become a full-time artist. Over the next six years Alfonso labored to become proficient in the metal world by working with both sculptors and metal craftsmen to attain an exhaustive knowledge of metal design and fabrication. Several years of custom metal work included many public works and sculptural signs that are visible in major US cities. Concurrently, Alfonso worked with internationally renowned sculptors in the fabrication and installation of large, commissioned works. By the mid 1990's Rey Alfonso arrived at the process in which he works today: A unique fusion of old world techniques and contemporary sculpture.
Rey believes that every painting has a life of its own and that through the visceral process of heat painting he is able to reveal certain internal truths that provoke in us states of joy, surprise, wonder and even meditation.
